If I was 61 and had an 80 mile commute I'd be a cranky bastard too.

well , good bad or indifferent i am glad people get pissed and post stuff and do the leg work for those that won't, otherwise stuff that really needs to get sorted would never be done by any of the manufacturers.

There's a big difference between hands-on types who do their own servicing - oil and tire changes, modifications, repairs - and those who prefer to have dealers/shops do all the work. I'd venture to guess that most of the people on this site are of the hands-on variety, and those who pay for services do it as a matter of convenience rather than ignorance of the motorcycle.

People who have no knowledge of the machines they deal with are at a distinct disadvantage when problems occur. They're at the mercy of others who may have their own agendas or are trying hide their own ignorance, and they have no recourse but to debate what they've been told and bitch about it. Rather than investigate dealers and mechanics and who said what, put some effort into solving the problem.

In this case, I don't recall anyone here EVER mentioning their drive belt getting narrower. Plenty of complaints about chirping tho, which was an issue for me early on, too, until I figured it out. Just put 8,000 miles on an Avon AV80 without a single peep from the belt, and 6,000 each on a couple of Metzlers before that. No wax or lube, none o'that nonsense, get it right and leave it alone.

My belt is approx. 1.5 mm narrower than stock. Happened after an early dealer service and tyre replacement. The wear occurred on my first flocking approx. 3000km round trip, no chirping, no noises, didn't pick it up till I got home due to rain and bad weather, dealer wasn't interested in replacing it hence I started doing all my own servicing since that day. They did rectify the alignment which was out by about 2mm.

No issues with the belt since and it's still the same size.

it seems he put quite a few miles on a bike he hated so much and had so many problems with.

I am not sure that I accept that the factory reps (or any OEM) would readily admit they had no control over their own dealers or products. And multiple sources at that. Even if true it seems and unlikely admission.

now denying there is a defect or a problem, I believe they all are capable of that.

also seems unlikely that just calling Gates rubber would get someone there to discuss in any detail their working relationship with triumph. these are not 'mom and pop' companies.

Does anyone know if Triumph changed any of the belt drive components on the LT's and Commanders? I never really had any problems with the belt on my bird but the chattering of the upper valve train was what pushed me to trade mine, still wish i hadn't . By the way almost 8k on my street glide and the belt is as quiet as a mouse so at least HD has the belt drive system figured out now if they could fix the ungodly heat coming off the rear cylinder they might have something. I'm waiting for the new speedmaster 1200 and i might jump back to Triumph The harley does everything well so far but it just doesn't stir my soul so this will be my one and only harley however long that maybe.

currently on a slow Harley but will have another Triumph eventually

Had you dumped that fuckin synthetic shit that Triumph, along with other motorcycle manufacturers, recommends, and changed to that inferior Dino oil like I did, you would have kept it and been a lot happier.Believe me.My valve train is nice and quiet since I did that. The only noise I hear now is from those CAST PISTONS that Triumph uses. And even THEY have quieted down since changing to that inferior oil.But whada I know? I'm just a dumb Polock! that is,a fat, happy, and Dumb Polock with a pretty quiet running motor, not to mention, with a shit load of miles on it!! The DUMB POLOCK!!!
